Snipe-IT is developed by Grokability and its community contributors and released under the AGPL-3.0 license (github.com/grokability/snipe-it). This case study covers my implementation of it.

Snipe-IT is the name of that project and belongs to its owners. This page is independent of them.

Quick view for recruiters

Problem solved

Organizations lose money on hardware and licenses they cannot account for, and they fail audits over it. Snipe-IT tracks all of it, and I stood up a working instance.

My role

I configured the database and runtime, containerized the application so the environment rebuilds identically anywhere, and recorded the full build, explaining each decision as I made it.

Technologies

PHPMySQLDockerDeployment

Key accomplishments

  • Stood up a working instance with its database and runtime configured.
  • Containerized the application for a reproducible environment.
  • Recorded and narrated the complete build as a technical demonstration.

Verified results

  • A working dashboard in the walkthrough, with sample records across assets, licenses, accessories, consumables, and components.
  • License seats added, with every change recorded in the activity log.
Business problem

Hardware and licenses nobody can account for.

Organizations lose money on hardware and licenses they cannot account for, and they fail audits over it. A system that records every asset, license seat, accessory, consumable, and the person responsible for each closes that gap.

My role and responsibilities

What I built and configured.

Database

Configured the database and runtime

Configured the MySQL database and the PHP runtime the application runs on.

Environment

Containerized the application

Packaged the deployment with Docker so the environment rebuilds identically anywhere.

Validation

Exercised the system with realistic data

Entered sample records across assets, licenses, accessories, consumables, and components, and added license seats. All of it shows up on the dashboard and in the activity log.

Documentation

Recorded the build

Captured the full build on video and explained each decision as I made it.

Technical implementation

The pieces, and how they connect.

  1. InterfaceBrowserPeople work in the Snipe-IT web interface.
  2. ApplicationPHP web applicationThe Snipe-IT software, installed and configured by me.
  3. DataMySQL databaseHolds the inventory records the dashboard reads and writes. I configured it.
  4. EnvironmentDocker containerPackages the runtime so the environment rebuilds identically anywhere.

A high-level overview. Credentials and environment files are never shown.

Components I worked on

The database, the PHP runtime the application runs on, and the container that packages them.

Technologies

PHP, MySQL, Docker.

Decision

Containerize the environment

The setup rebuilds identically anywhere instead of being recreated by hand each time.

What the walkthrough exercises

Tracking for assets, licenses, accessories, consumables, and components, plus people, license seats, and an activity log of every change.

Walkthrough

Application walkthrough and technical demonstration.

A narrated walkthrough of the build, explaining each decision.

In the frame above
  • An instance titled “Snipe-IT Project Management” running in the browser at a local address.
  • Dashboard counts for assets, licenses, accessories, consumables, components, and people.
  • A Recent Activity log of newly created inventory records and added license seats.
  • An Assets by Status chart showing Pending and Ready to Deploy.
What I contributed
  • Configured the database and runtime.
  • Containerized the application so the environment rebuilds identically.
  • Entered sample inventory data across every category.
  • Recorded the build and explained each decision as I made it.
About Snipe-IT

The application, its interface, and its features are Snipe-IT’s own, developed by Grokability and its contributors. My work is the implementation: configuration, containerized deployment, and the demonstration.

Results

What the build delivers.

Outcome

A working instance

A running Snipe-IT dashboard with assets, licenses, accessories, consumables, components, and people.

Outcome

A reproducible environment

A containerized deployment that rebuilds identically instead of depending on hand-configuration.

Outcome

A walkthrough anyone can follow

The complete build recorded, with each decision explained.

Engineering lesson

Containerizing the environment means I can rebuild it identically instead of recreating it from memory. That reproducibility is why I chose it.

Next step

Ask me to walk you through the build.

The best first conversation is a short call where you describe a system your team needs stood up and explained.
